街コンとは? — What Exactly Is a Machikon?

A machikon (街コン) is a large-scale social mixer event held across multiple venues in a town or city district. Unlike a traditional goukon (group date), machikon events are open to the public, often hosting dozens to hundreds of singles in one evening. Participants move between participating restaurants and bars, meeting new people at each stop.

If you've never been before, the concept can feel intimidating — but with the right preparation, your first machikon can be a genuinely fun and rewarding experience.

How to Register for a Machikon

  1. Find an event: Use platforms like machicon JAPAN, Paty, or local city websites to browse upcoming events near you.
  2. Check the format: Some events are "2男2女" (2 men + 2 women per table), others rotate freely. Read the format carefully.
  3. Pay the entry fee: Fees typically range from ¥3,000–¥6,000 for men and ¥2,000–¥4,000 for women, often including food and drinks.
  4. Receive your ticket/QR code: Confirmation is usually sent by email. Save it to your phone.
  5. Arrive on time: Events start with a briefing — being late means missing crucial instructions.

What Actually Happens on the Day

Most machikon events follow a similar structure:

  • Check-in: Arrive at the designated starting venue, show your ticket, and receive a name tag (often just your first name).
  • Opening briefing: Staff explain the format, rotation schedule, and rules.
  • Venue rotation: You'll visit 2–4 participating venues over 2–3 hours, sitting with different groups each time.
  • Line/SNS exchange time: At each table, there's usually a moment to exchange LINE IDs with people you'd like to see again.
  • Closing / after-party: Many events have an optional nijikai (second party) where interest levels are more open.

Beginner Mistakes to Avoid

  • Going alone and staying silent — Machikon rewards initiative. Smile, introduce yourself first.
  • Only talking to one person — The beauty of machikon is meeting many people. Keep it casual and spread your energy.
  • Drinking too much — Drinks are included but pacing yourself keeps you sharp and memorable for the right reasons.
  • Forgetting business cards or LINE ready — Have your LINE QR code ready on your phone before the event starts.
  • Dressing too casually — Even if the event feels casual, putting in effort with your appearance signals genuine interest in meeting someone.

Essential Mindset for Beginners

The most important thing to remember at your first machikon: treat it as a social experience, not a job interview. You're not there to land a partner in one evening — you're there to practice conversation, have fun, and hopefully find one or two people worth meeting again.

Approach each table with genuine curiosity about the people there. Ask open questions, listen actively, and remember names. That simple approach puts you ahead of the majority of attendees.
